“This Is Why You Keep Procrastinating (Even When You Have Big Dreams)”
Why You Still Procrastinate (Even When You Know Better)
It’s not laziness — it’s deeper than that. And maybe a little TikTok.
You’ve read all the productivity tips.
You’ve made to-do lists, watched motivational videos, and even promised yourself “Today will be different.”
But still — you scroll. You delay. You clean your entire room just to avoid one math question.
Or you stare at your ceiling dramatically like you're in a sad music video.
Why?
It’s not because you’re lazy.
It’s because your brain is wired for comfort, not growth. And let’s be honest, the couch is comfortable.
The Real Reason We Procrastinate:
Procrastination is not a time issue — it’s an emotional issue.
Most of us avoid tasks not because they’re hard, but because they make us feel uncomfortable.
- Maybe it’s fear of failure.
- Maybe it’s perfectionism.
- Maybe it’s the fact that your assignment’s name is literally “Final Suffering.docx.”
“Procrastination isn’t about avoiding the task. It’s about avoiding the feeling the task brings.”
— Wirda Siddique
👀 Ask yourself:
- What specific feeling am I avoiding when I delay this task?
- Am I scared of starting it… or scared of not being perfect at it?
- Do I expect myself to be productive or flawless?
What It Looked Like for Me
As a 15-year-old who dreams big, I’ve often found myself stuck in cycles of inaction.
I knew I wanted to write, build something, do something — but I’d keep delaying.
Sometimes I'd open my laptop with all the motivation in the world...
...and somehow end up watching videos like “What if the Moon had a twin?”
Then one day I asked myself: What exactly am I avoiding?
The answer wasn’t “work.”
It was discomfort. The pressure to be perfect. The fear of not being good enough.
📌 Reflect here:
- What do you tell yourself right before you avoid something important?
- Would you let your younger self speak to herself like that?
How I’m Working Through It
Here are three things that are helping me (and none of them involve becoming a robot):
🔹 Make it too easy to fail
I started with just 5 minutes of focused work. No pressure. No guilt. Just 5 minutes.
If I can scroll TikTok for 45 minutes without blinking, I can do this.
✅ Try this:
What’s one task you’ve been putting off?
Can you do just 5 minutes of it right now, without trying to “finish” it?
🔹 Change the environment
I cleared my desk, put my phone away, and lit a small candle.
It felt like I was summoning study demons, but it worked.
✅ Ask yourself:
Does your environment invite focus or scream “scroll me”?
🔹 Chase momentum, not motivation
Motivation is unreliable. Momentum is that awkward first step that turns into, “Okay fine, I’m actually doing this.”
🧠 Think about this:
What’s one small “win” you can create today that makes you feel accomplished — even if it’s tiny?
Final Words
Procrastination isn’t your enemy. It’s your mind’s way of saying, “Can we just not do scary things today?”
But your dreams? They’re scarier to lose than your comfort zone is to leave.
If you’ve been stuck lately, just take one tiny step — even reading this counts.
You’re not lazy. You’re human. And you’re hilarious. And capable.
